[Satellite Today – 6-19-08] The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has provided an update on satellite’s performance in Canada’s broadcast market. The Commission said June 18, that total combined revenues for DTH and MDS (Multipoint Distribution Systems) companies increased 11.4 percent between 2006 and 2007, going from C$1.7 billion ($1.67 billion) to $1.85 billion ($1.81 billion). The number of DTH and MDS subscribers rose only slightly over the same period, by approximately 0.1 percent to 2.6 million.
The pay-TV market in Canada seems particularly buoyant at the moment. Overall, total revenues for cable, DTH satellite distribution and MDS companies experienced substantial growth between 2006 and 2007. Cable companies’ total revenues exceeded C$7 billion ($6.87 billion) for the first time ever in 2007, while the combined revenues of DTH and MDS companies reached a new high with this figure of $1.85 billion.
