BLUSAT OFFERS SATELLITE BROADBAND SERVICES

By Staff Writer | October 10, 2001

Italian-based BluSat is the latest company to offer satellite-based broadband services aimed mainly at a business clientele. Already active in Italy and Spain – with plans to expand to Central and South America – it calls itself a “full Internet provider” but does not limit its activities to offering communications via satellite.

Speaking exclusively to Interspace, BluSat’s commercial director Alberto Martini said: “the solutions based on Internet via satellite should be integrated with existing network structures, harmonised with clients’ needs and have to be a communication support enriched with value added services”. BluSat uses Eutelsat (especially Sesat at 36 degrees East) and Telecom 2A, and in Martini’s view “Sesat offers an excellent coverage of North and Eastern Europe, where dozens of Italian companies have their production units. These are zones in which terrestrial network structures are still underdeveloped and, as a consequence, very costly. The satellite, in this case, offers a competitive advantage, as well as technological”.

Potential BluSat customers currently have a choice of three commercial offers. While BluSat Enterprise is the ideal solution for medium and large companies with offices scattered throughout a territory (the service including bi-directional connectivity via satellite at speeds of up to 2Mb/s), BluSat Business 3 – also aimed at small and medium businesses – offers higher speeds. These are 640Kb/s in download and 128Kb/s in upload, while the third option (BluSat Speedway) offers Internet via satellite access that supports traditional terrestrial connections with speeds of between 200 to 640 Kb/s.
