Singapore Poised to Develop Satellite and Space Technology Industry

Singapore has announced its intentions to develop its satellite and space technology industry. The country is creating the Office for Space Technology and Industry (OSTIn), an inter-agency office to oversee the development of its local space industry.
The office is leaded by the Economic Development Board (EDB), together with other participating ministries and agencies such as the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR); the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF); Ministry of Education (MOE); Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA); Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI); and the National Research Foundation (NRF).
OSTIn is expected to plan and execute economic strategies to drive the growth of the local space industry. The office will also provide incentives and work with industry stakeholders to help them conduct their satellite business from Singapore. It is already supporting two projects at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore to stimulate the country’s public satellite capabilities.
Separately, Singapore Technologies Electronics (ST Electronics) has announced its subsidiary ST Electronics (Satellite Systems) is developing the first made-in-Singapore commercial remote sensing satellite, TeLEOS-1, targeted for a 2015 launch.
