[Satellite TODAY 07-18-12] Lockheed Martin has awarded the satellite communication component of the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) C-130J Super Hercules Block 8.1 upgrade to Cobham and Thrane & Thrane, the companies confirmed July 17.

The program, which involves the upgrade of over 200 aircraft, represents a value of more than $24.7 million, with a roll out period from 2014 to 2018.
Thrane & Thrane will deliver its DO178B certified Aviator 700D product, which is prepared for FANS1/A operation and supports a combination of current Inmarsat cockpit safety provisions as well as SwiftBroadband IP data and voice capability. The Block 8.1 upgrade will be implemented on the fleets of a large number of C-130J operators in the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Denmark, Canada, Norway and the United States.
Thrane & Thrane CEO Walther Thygesen said the award would have no impact on his company’s revenue and profit expectations, as previously set out in its announcement for its fiscal year ending April 30.
