Telesat Wins Canadian Government X-band Service Deal

By Jeffrey Hill | June 4, 2012

[Satellite TODAY 06-04-12] Satellite fleet operator Telesat will provide X-band satellite bandwidth to Canadian government agencies located in Canada and throughout the world under a new contract it has signed with Shared Services Canada (SSC) for an undisclosed amount, the operator confirmed June 1.

The SSC functions as part of Canada’s Public Works and Government Services Canada. Telesat said it won the SSC award following a competitive bidding process.
The contract calls for the regular use of Astrium Services-owned satellites to fulfill its requirements. Telesat will use Astrium’s X-band satellite capacity to meet the Canadian government’s demand. Astrium Services owns and operates the British Skynet fleet of military communications satellites through its Paradigm Secure Communications subsidiary.
Astrium has a lease in place for the X-band payload aboard Telesat’s Anik G1 satellite, which will be launched into the 107.3 degrees West orbital slot later this year.
