Azercosmos: Work Underway on New Azerspace Satellite

By Jeffrey Hill | April 10, 2012

[Satellite TODAY 04-10-12] Work is underway to launch Azerbaijan’s first national satellite by its planned target date at the end of the year, Azercosmos announced April 9.

Orbital Sciences Corp. is building Azerbaijan’s first satellite, Azerspace, based on its Star-2 platform. Arianespace will launch the satellite in the fourth quarter (November or December 2012) on an Ariane 5 rocket from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
Azercosmos will operate and manage the satellite to provide communications services, telecommunications, high-speed satellite Internet, TV and radio broadcasting and imagery services.
In-flight connectivity service specialist OnAir recently said it could potentially use the resources of the Azerspace satellite and that negotiations have already been held.
“Only 20 percent of [the satellite’s] resources will be used to meet the Republic’s needs with the remainder sold on the international market. Resources of Azerbaijani satellite will be used by the Malaysian company for the provision of telecommunication services and broadcasting,” OnAir said in a company statement.
