Pakistan Fires Nuclear-Capable Short Range Missile

Pakistan launched a short-range nuclear-capable missile, during military exercises.

The nuclear-power nation has had the bomb since before India detonated a nuclear device and Pakistan test-fired one of its own in response.

Pakistan poses a delicate problem for U.S. diplomats. On the one hand, Pakistan is an ally in the war on terror. And it has calmed the nuclear tensions that erupted between Pakistan and India.

However, Pakistan may be a hiding place for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who may be in a cave in a mountainous area. As well, Pakistan has a porous border with Afghanistan that terrorists pass over freely.

European Drone Cargo Spaceship Nears Launch Set For March 8

An unmanned European cargo spaceship is nearing a scheduled launch in the early-morning hours of March 8.

The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) will be lofted on a mission to the International Space Station by an Ariane 5 rocket, Arianespace announced.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy inspected the ATV on a tour of the European Spaceport at French Guiana, South America.

The ATV was moved from the S5 facility where cargo and fuel were onloaded, to the Final Assembly Building where it will be integrated with the Ariane 5 ES.

With a liftoff weight of more than 19 metric tons, the ATV will deliver propellant, oxygen, equipment, systems, food and water for the orbital space station and its international crew.

The ATV will be the largest single payload ever launched by Ariane.

Its mission is the first of seven Ariane 5 flights planned for this year.

Radiation of such magnitude can only be generated under the most extreme conditions, thus GLAST will focus on studying the most energetic objects and phenomena in the universe.

Description: NOAA-N Prime is the latest polar-orbiting satellite developed by NASA/Goddard Spaceflight Center for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA uses two satellites, a morning and afternoon satellite, to ensure every part of the Earth is observed at least twice every 12 hours. NOAA-N will collect information about Earth’s atmosphere and environment to improve weather prediction and climate research across the globe.
