ISRO Plans on Heavy Rocket, Prepares for Upcoming IRNSS Launch

[Via Satellite 01-05-2016] The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is planning to build its heaviest rocket to carry satellites weighing 10 tons into space. Currently, the space agency’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) can carry satellites weighing only 2 tons, according to a report by Business Standard.

ISRO is developing a semi-cryogenic engine that runs on kerosene and liquid oxygen to power the proposed rocket. This engine, built by Godrej Aerospace, would help bring down the cost of launch, according to reports.

Meanwhile, ISRO will launch its fifth of seven Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) on Jan. 20. The satellite will be part of India’s constellation of geolocation satellites that would help in disaster management, mapping and navigation.
