David Gelerman, CEO of Advantech Wireless, talks to Via Satellite’s Editorial Director, Mark Holmes, at the SATELLITE 2014

In a video interview at SATELLITE 2014, David Gelerman, CEO of Advantech Wireless told Mark Holmes, editorial director of Via Satellite, that he expects Gallium Nitride (GaN) to be the technology of choice over Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs) and Klystrons.

“In my mind, in the next several years, most RF applications in the satellite communications will be serviced by GaN technology,” Gelerman said.

This follows a discussion on Advantech’ expansion into emerging markets. According to Gelerman, Advantech cut the capital expenses of a $20 million project in Brazil by over half. Furthermore, he expects the project to save money from henceforth on operational expenses. Advantech is now looking to expand in other parts of Latin America and to branch out toward Indonesia and Pakistan.

“[There were] a lot of naysayers who said ‘don’t do it because it was never done before, and it may or may not work.’ So people took a chance and we successfully [proved them wrong], now we proved them right because people took a chance and [the risk-takers] are actually now happy.”
