Industry Awaits for Hosted Payload Breakthrough from the US Government

By Mark Holmes | August 6, 2013

While there is clearly an international opportunity for hosted payloads, a lot of eyes still remain on the U.S. government. While we have seen a slew of deals earlier this year, a real breakthrough with the U.S. government may not be far away. Hosted Payloads are set to enter the thinking far earlier when looking at particular missions, which in itself would be a huge step forward. The fruits of that could start to be seen in the next year.

In this edition of Via Satellite’s Hosted Payload E-Letter, we have an exclusive interview with Douglas Loverro, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Space Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In it, he talks in-depth about the latest initiatives to bring hosted payloads into the equation and how the latest IDIQ contract represents progress toward a future on where hosted payloads could become a key part of future missions.

We also talk to Janet Nickloy, director, strategy & business development for national programs at Harris. Nickloy also serves as theChair of the Hosted Payload Alliance. In this interview Nickloy talks about the opportunities for Harris as well as the broader hosted payloads market, and how the company could serve U.S. government needs over the next few years.

The theme of this E-Letter is that building blocks are now being put in place, and the hosted payload segment could see significant shifts over the next few years. The future is bright and while 2013 has already seen its fair share of deals, more could be around the corner.
