DigitalGlobe Imagery Selected for 3-D Processing in Germany

By | May 10, 2011
[Satellite TODAY 05-10-11] Earth imagery solutions provider DigitalGlobe has entered into a cooperative agreement with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and German tourism company 3D RealityMaps to provide a range of 3-D data products, DigitalGlobe announced May 9.
DigitalGlobe’s satellite fleet will capture the data and deliver it to 3D RealityMaps after the imagery is processed to create high-definition 3-D maps of large-scale natural landmarks and other major tourist destinations worldwide by DLR.
“Most current 3-D models of Mount Everest, for example, are created at a lower resolution, which makes rock faces blurred and coloring unnatural. With a ground resolution of the 3-D data of 150 centimeters, our application is about 400 times better than that available in most 3D views of the mountain. This is truly a breakthrough in satellite imagery-based 3D modeling and real time 3D rendering,” 3D Reality Maps CEO Florian Siegert said in a statement.
