Ares 1-X Test Flight Launched After Weather Delays

      [Satellite TODAY 10-29-09] NASA launched the Ares 1-X test flight after several delays , NASA announced Oct. 28.
          The prototype rocket, originally scheduled for launch Oct. 27, was designed to fly for two minutes before its first-stage booster burns out. Following the test, NASA will recover the booster from the Atlantic Ocean for research and analysis.
          The $445 million Ares 1-X constellation program hopes replace the Space Shuttle after its retirement and send astronauts to the International Space Station, the moon and eventually, Mars pending approval from the Obama administration, which has yet to make a decision on Ares funding.

      An Atlas V solid rocket motor passed a burst test, a contractor reported. The burst test and re-qualification of the upgraded Atlas V Solid Rocket Motor composite case was conducted at an Aerojet test facility in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
