[Satellite TODAY 08-13-09] Lockheed Martin broke ground on two new facilities that will support spacecraft programs for government and commercial customers at its Space Systems Company operations in Newtown, Pa., Lockheed Martin announced Aug. 12.
The new facilities include a 17,000-square-foot addition to expand Lockheed Martin’s satellite manufacturing capability at the west end of the company’s product team building facility. The addition will house a near-field antenna range, a new passive inter-modulation chamber, and a new antenna assembly clean room. Lockheed Martin said that future product holdings and fixture preparations are also being planned for the facility.
The company is also building a 15,000-square-foot multi-purpose conference center, which will facilitate large-scale meetings such as design reviews, demonstration initiatives and customer events.
The estimated cost of the projects is $24 million.
“Our new conference center will enable us to better serve our customers around the world, and our manufacturing expansion will facilitate assembly, integration and test of essential GPS III components,” said Lockheed Martin Space Systems’ Vice President and General Manager, Marshall Byrd, in a statement.
