Military Market Looks to Pick Up Speed in 2012

By the rush of contracts the Pentagon announced at the very start of 2012, it's sometimes hard to tell that the military markets are operating in a cost-conscious mode. The government satellite industry usually takes a few days to shake off the holiday season lull, but not this year. Look at the contracts section of this e-letter, and you'll see that the Air Force didn't take much of a break.
Analyst firms project that government and military satellite communications revenues will grow from an estimated $4.0 billion in 2010 to $9.4 billion by 2020, producing total revenues of $71.9 billion during an 11-year period. Though analysts warn the industry that increasing budget pressures are at the core of government decisions in choosing its preferred solution mix over the long-term.
This is a critical year for military satellite systems. Between WGS, CHIRP, Global Xpress, Iridium Next, GPS, hosted payloads, UAVs and other platforms, there's not going to be much of a break. You either keep up or fall behind.
