The New Congress and the Future of Military Spending

Most of the military satellite sector knew that the U.S. military spending cuts were bound to happen. As a new budget-conscious Congress took office in early January, it became only a matter of when and by how much.
When U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates released in December his plan to cut 2012 military spending by $553 billion, many predicted that new technologies will be even more weighted on efficiency and operational cost-cutting and could even drive new infrastructure upgrade business. But the truth remains that the Pentagon has yet to decide how it will adapt to this new political environment. Based on track record, the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives should enhance support for stronger military budgets, but the rise of deficit hawk Tea Party only raises more questions about the level of support military budgets will receive.
Some government/military satellite companies may return to the days of “cautious optimism” — a term frequently used by the industry during the early days of the recession.  But the companies that have come into 2011 prepared and ready to adapt will produce the quarterly reports that stand out.

Instead, the U.S. Department of Defense will see an increase of less than 1 percent. While this is the smallest increase the Pentagon has received over the last 15 years, the plan calls for smaller increases to its rate of growth in 2013 and 2014 and then no growth whatsoever in 2015 and 2016 ...More»
