FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
As the nature of warfare continues to be redefined, military forces are finding that they need to be even more nimble — able to be deployed rapidly into any number of environments while also having the latest information available at a moment’s notice. This means decisionmakers are looking for the latest technology that can provide on-the-move, secure communications that can satisfy the needs of the soldiers in the field and meet numerous different requirements laid out by the multiple number of deployed forces that are expect to interoperate seamlessly.
This month’s edition of Via Satellite’s Military Satcom Extra takes a look at efforts being taken to use the latest technology, such as IP-enabled communications, to make sure operational forces are in touch with each other and with headquarters as well as looking into new initiatives for using satellites to track cargo shipments around the globe. Also, J.P. Stevens, vice president of space systems for the Aerospace Industries Association, discusses the Obama administration’s stance on space weapons and its potential impact on the industry.
