FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Over the past year, some industry analysts have expressed concerns that IP-provided voice, video and data services would render satellite obsolete. They claimed that IPTV would dismantle the satellite broadcast sector and that telecoms would back satellite cellular services into a corner. Now that the dust is settled and IP-satellite hybrid services and dual-mode handsets are being discussed and developed as revenue drivers, let it be known that there is plenty of space for both IP and satellite to compete and work together.
Another common misconception of IP is that it is the new kid on the telecommunications block and that its partnership with satellite is breaking new ground. In their Via Satellite article, "IP and Satellite: Communication Worlds Merging," writers Greg Berlocher and Dan Freyer point out that enterprise video networks have employed IP since the late 1990s, and the technology hs been used in satellite Internet backbone connectivity links, corporate VSAT and consumer applications with huge benefits in terms of cost savings and network flexibility. What is new about IP technology is its supporting products and media have reached the point where there are more options for enhancement and the ability to fully utilize the speed of its connectivity.
