Nagravision Targets Online TV with New Software

Nagravision, a Kudelski Group company, will launch software aimed at offering operators a secure pay-TV solution on the PC, Robin Wilson’s Nagravision’s vice president of business development, told the IBC E-Daily.

This could offer satellite pay-TV operators a solution should they want to extend their pay-TV offerings to the PC, she said. “The PC is very open and generally viewed as an insecure device, but we have developed the new Nagra Media Player. This solution includes a secure software client for open devices like a PC and either supports conventional broadcast with a USB key or over-the-top and multicast IPTV without any hardware. The secure software client is important because it allows premium content to be accessed by a subscriber and viewed on a PC. It means that pay-TV operators can expand their subscriber base beyond their existing networks or in addition to their existing linear offerings.”

Providing content protection across different screens is now a focal point for the company. “The Nagravision solutions for three-screen television viewing are attracting a great deal of attention from pay-TV operators worldwide, across all market segments. These solutions offer innovative business models for operators of all sizes. Each platform provides different challenges and different types of technology solutions. It is a matter of matching the right solution to the right screen,” Wilson said.

With consumers wanting to access content on a myriad of devices, it is becoming a more challenging environment for a company specializing in content protection such as Nagravision. “The whole world is converging Web and TV, and this raises all types of technology challenges and opportunities. A dual strategy of diversification based on armored software and or armored hardware continues to combat this threat and provide a secure environment for our customers,” she said.

The Kudelski Group also announced the acquisition of Medioh!, a media technology company aggregating mid-tail content and providing a widget and content publishing platform for multimedia devices. “This acquisition demonstrates Nagravision’s strong focus on developing Web-enabled service platform solutions across its extensive pay-TV customer base. It also strengthens our global DTV portfolio and enables a personalized TV experience, including customized publication of content and widgets, recommendation and social television applications as well as a widget store,” Wilson said.
