Nielsen: 11 Percent of U.S. Households Still Use Antennas to Watch TV

 Archives Copyright
[Satellite TODAY 12-30-09] Although the number of households with antennas in the U.S. fell slightly in the last year, about 11 percent of U.S. households, or about 13 million homes, watch over-the-air broadcasts through antennas, according to a Nielsen Co. report released Dec. 24
Nielsen said that there is a concentration of TV antenna use in Southern California among certain demographic groups. The report claims that nearly 20,000 Asian American homes in the region began using rabbit ears, and that 8,000 African American households switched back to over-the-air TV after the transition to digital. Latinos were the demographic with the most antenna-equipped households in the region, with nearly a quarter of them, or about 440,000 homes, watching over-the-air broadcasts.
"Everyone who [switches back to antenna TV] says the picture quality is actually better than what you're getting through cable," said Patricia McDonough, a senior vice president at Nielsen, in a statement.
