[Via Satellite 12-16-2016] O3b Networks struck an agreement with Digicel to boost broadband capacity to support the Green Climate Fund (GCF) convention and board meeting held in Apia, Samoa from Sunday, Dec. 11 to Thursday, Dec. 15. GCF mandates 280 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth for meetings to support 360 participants. In order for Samoa to meet those requirements, government officials worked with Digicel and O3b to provide surge capacity for this important event.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change created GCF to advance a global response to climate change, and to mobilize funding for low-emission and climate-resilient development. To date, the GCF board has raised more than $10 billion to fund investments in both mitigation and adaptation that support the goal of keeping Earth’s temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius.

O3b first provided Digicel, a communications operator in Samoa, with satellite-enabled connectivity more than two years ago. Since then, demand for the service has grown substantially and Digicel Samoa has worked with O3b to scale up link capacities, nearly doubling its contracted capacity in response.
