Telespazio to Distribute Eurosport Olympic Coverage in HD, 3-D

By Jeffrey Hill | July 23, 2012

[Satellite TODAY 07-23-12] Thales-Finmeccanica joint venture Telespazio has signed an agreement with Eurosport to distribute 3-D broadcasts of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Telespazio announced July 20.

The transmission will use frequencies on Eutelsat’s Hot Bird 13 satellite via digital television platforms that are operated by Telespazio.
Telespazio said the HD and 3-D signals would be delivered side-by-side in the DVB standard to enable transmissions within a normal HD channel.
“This set-up allows us to maintain the infrastructure of home satellite reception without making changes,” Telespazio said in a company statement. “Customers just need to use a decoder to receive the broadcasts, regardless if they are HD or 3-D.”
Telespazio’s Eurosport deal follows similar awards the broadcaster won to transmit the 2010 World Cup in HD for Rai and to broadcast the Paris Tennis Tournament at Roland Garros in HD and 3-D for Eurosport in 2012.
