[Satellite Today – 5-19-08] Televisa, a major broadcaster in Latin America, has signed a deal with Tandberg Television for the delivery of Televisa programming throughout Mexico via satellite, Tandberg announced May 19
Televisa, which operates three broadcast networks in Mexico and also produces 30 television channels for pay-TV systems delivered to more than 18 million pay-TV subscribers in more than 48 countries, will become one of the first broadcasters in North America to move from MPEG-2 to an all MPEG-4 AVC distribution solution for its broadcast affiliates. Using the same amount of satellite bandwidth, the Tandberg allows Televisa to simultaneously distribute high-definition and standard-definition content.
Televisa hopes the Tandberg encoding and decoding systems will enable it to achieve very efficient bandwidth utilization. According to Tandberg, the systems more than halve the bit rate required by MPEG-2 while protecting and maintaining the picture quality of each video stream.
