[12-12-07 – Satellite Today] Siano Mobile Silicon has signed agreements with CMB Satellite and Huaqi to provide advanced solutions for CMMB, China’s planned mobile TV service, Siano announced Dec. 11.
CMMB technology was developed in China and selected by the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television as the main platform for delivering TV services to mobile devices. The network will use satellite and terrestrial signals to provide coverage in cities, including indoor reception, as well as rural areas. Siano will provide the mobile TV chip for Huaqi’s handheld devices.
“The Chinese mobile TV market represents a huge commercial potential,” Dave Shull, CEO of CMB Satellite, said in a statement. “In order to secure the successful launch of CMMB, it is imperative that consumers will be able to receive the signal at extremely high quality, both indoors and out, using low power and inexpensive handheld devices.”
The service is expected to launch prior to the start of the Beijing Olympics.
