MSUA-11: Handheld MSS: Innovative Solutions to Drive Renewed Market Growth

Date of Event:
March 12th, 2014

Run Time:
16:45 - 17:45

Room Number:
140A

Track:
MSUA-11

The landmark announcement of Thuraya’s SatSleeve in early 2013 set the MSS handset business on a new path towards leveraging potential customers’ existing terrestrial cellphones, as opposed to just being a standalone solution that is kept in a cupboard for emergencies or remote travel. However, after the the challenges faced by TerreStar in breaking into the MSS market, and with continued shifts in terrestrial cellphone form factors, it remains unclear how best to take advantage of this opportunity. In the face of continuing reductions in satellite voice usage, as terrestrial coverage grows ever more widespread, it is also becoming critical for MSS operators to take advantage of growing data usage by cellphone users, despite the relatively limited data rates available on MSS phones. This panel will hear from the leading providers about how they plan to develop their handset products and services, and discuss their expectations for the future of the handheld voice market in 2014 and beyond. Separate MSUA-11 Conference registration required to attend.
